5 Fun Things to Do in the Spring
Is the weather warming up for you? It is for me, and I am so ready to enjoy it. If you are looking for fun things to do in the spring, spring activities for kids or families, or just want to feel like you are starting the new season off right, this is the post for you. I’ve got 5 GREAT ways to kickstart spring.
Get outside!
This one is pretty obvious, but it’s also my favorite. After a long and dreary winter, there is nothing like warmer weather and sunshine to get me itching to be outside. If you can combine it with a little exercise, all the better. A great way to enjoy the first warm days of spring is to check out your local hiking or rails to trails paths. Since it’s not the hot, humid days of summer, hiking is enjoyable AND it’s something we can do right now.
Not into hiking? How about playing some yard games? Now is the perfect time to dust off that old croquet set or play a family game of cornhole! It’s a nice change from all the board games and puzzles you might have played all winter!
Get up early
It’s easier to get up early in the spring and summer as the sun comes up earlier. Plus, early morning in the spring is lovely. Grab your cup of coffee and a good book or your journal and start your day off outside or at least near an open window. A new season is the perfect time to implement a new morning routine, one that will take you successfully through the summer. I promise you that if you can make this a habit, you’ll feel more productive and more centered as you begin each day!
Insider tip: Looking for help in creating a morning routine? My favorite (and super affordable) course on this is from Crystal Paine. I’ve gone through it several times myself and find it useful every time!
Switch up dinner
There is just something about grilling dinner that feels special. Your yard will smell amazing and it’s so simple to clean up afterwards! Plus, it’s a lot of fun to grill when the weather is nice. Pour yourself a glass of wine or lemonade and bring dinner outdoors. Whether it’s salmon, steak or burgers, grilling is a fun way to kickoff the warm weather seasons!
For a bonus, eat dinner outside! It may not be your local restaurant, but I bet anything it’ll be delicious and a much more special evening than normal!
Celebrate a Spring Holiday
Aside from Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, there aren’t a lot of big holidays during Spring. So, why not find a smaller “holiday” and celebrate it? Finding a few of these can be really fun spring activities for the kids, and you can make them as elaborate or simple as you’d like.
Not sure how to do this? It’s easy, check out Days of the Year and pick a few fun days coming up and then create a simple plan to celebrate them.
For example, for Star Wars Day on May 4th, you can watch a Star Wars movie (or 9). Tell everyone you know “May the 4th be with you”. Try to re-create some of the fun cocktails available at Oga’s Cantina! If you have a Star Wars fanatic as we do in the house, you can even play Star Wars Monopoly.
Clean out that closet
Okay, maybe this one isn’t fun for everyone, but you’ll feel fantastic when it’s finished, and it’s perfect for those rainy spring days when getting outside isn’t feasible. Once the weather seems to be warm more than cold, I put away my winter clothes and pull out the warm weather clothing. It feels great to not have to dig through a bunch of sweaters to find my t-shirts and tank tops. Plus, once those heavy clothes are gone, your closet will feel more spring-like too!
Insider tip: Need a little help in this area? My favorite place to go for fashion advice is GYPO. She has frequent challenges perfect for updating your style, and a great place to start is the Closet Staples Casual Capsule Wardrobe Builder – it’s perfect for any season of life!
So how are you going to kickstart spring? I challenge you to pick one or two of these ideas and make this spring memorable! Don’t let life just fade from winter to summer – celebrate the season!

Wonderful list! We love to get up early and go for a walk. My kids love looking for birds and other wildlife while I just love being surrounded by everything that is waking up from a long winter.
We’ve been doing that too and it’s been a highlight of the day. Our dog is skittish so if we are out early I don’t have to worry about bicycles, lawn mowers, etc. Feels so great to start the day that way too.
Clean out a closet is a great idea!
Right? We never feel like doing it but it’s great when it’s done. And such a good way to kick off a new season.
Great ideas! We have been grilling outside for a few weeks but last night was the first time we were able to eat outside. It felt so nice!
There is just something about eating outside – makes it feel so much more special!
I find waking up early is so great for me, I feel like I’m getting the most out of my day.
I agree – it makes SUCH a difference – I’ve really been focusing on it lately.
This is a great list! My son will enjoy a Star Wars day. We’re counting down for the release of The Rise of Skywalker on May 4th.
We’ll be watching it too! And I’ll be sharing a link for Star Wars Trivia on my Facebook page Monday!
We have been enjoying dinner outside for some time now. Spring is the best time because summers in Texas are sweltering. Thanks for the tips!
I bet – now is YOUR time to be outside!
I definitely felt the weather change here in California and I felt so motivated to do some Spring cleaning. We finally got rid of things old roommates left and decided to really make our apartment look professionally decorated and it has been such a fun project and refreshing!
What a great way to spend this stay at home time!
I wish I could get up earlier and enjoy the quiet before my household wakes up! I just love my sleep mornings too much.
It is definitely a struggle, but I find the day is so much better when I force myself up!
We have already started cooking out and going on nice hikes.
So nice!
I love all of these spring activities. We’ve already grilled out a couple of times, and I love going outside, just to stand barefoot in the grass. I just wish my allergies were more cooperative. I just drug up and hope for the best.
Thanks! I do the same – started my Claritin early this year in hopes it would be an easier spring.
Good idea, I do a swap around for the four seasons of my clothes. It’s going into winter here and currently cold weather. Getting the garden up to date gets me outside.
There’s just something about a closet full of only clothes you will wear, isn’t there?
I definitely have all 5 of these on my list. The getting up early is only because I have a baby, but… ♀️
Ha! Good for you!
This is a great list for anyone to do! I would like to try getting up early. I am more of an afternoon pigeon. ha!
I love it!
Nice ideas, I definitely want to start eating dinner outside more!
There is just something about it that makes the dinner feel more special.
Great tips! Getting up early makes a huge difference for the day and the closet clean-out provides a sense of accomplishment.
So true!
I love getting up early and enjoying some me time in the nice weather. Hopefully, the rain will stop here soon and we can grill out and enjoy eating on the deck or patio. My birthday is in May, so there is always something to celebrate here!
It sounds like plenty of good times ahead!
So ready for spring and hit some rails to trails hiking paths…and also doing some spring cleaning on my office and, of course, yard work.
Yes, yes, and yes!
Good thing about having doggies is the need to walk them! We love taking them on local hikes too. They love exercise as much as we do.
I agree – it’s kept us very active.
Great tips on hanging out with nature 🙂
Thanks!
Fantastic ideas for the spring. Spring cleaning is the one I dread!
Thanks – I hear you, not my favorite either but it feels so good to have it done!
I love these ideas. I am always happy when it warms up enough to get outside comfortably!
Me too.
Love eating outside. It just gives a specialness to it. Especially when the weather is so great.
I agree!
This is a good list! I love celebrating those minor holidays and taking walks on new trails.
Thanks!
Great ideas! My daughter can’t wait to watch “Rise of Skywalker” tonight!! That will be happening for sure!! She’ll love that there is a board game too!
If she is a Star Wars fan, she should definitely check it out – very fun.
Great ideas to enjoy spring. I absolutely love this time of year. I love to see all the blooms and it seems so hopeful.
I agree!
Love all these ideas! As a cyclist, the outdoors are my second home.
I bet – and so when the weather breaks I’m sure you are out there on long rides!
The best part of spring is being able to grill again! Fun list!
Thanks! I agree 🙂
Grilling is my definitely one of my FAVORITE parts of the warm weather! It keeps the heat (and mess) outside, and my husband does the grilling while I do the dishes and make the side(s). Good ideas, thanks for sharing!
All great reasons!
These are all really great ideas and things that I typically do in the Spring as well! I love getting up early in the spring to have coffee & journal and we just cleaned out a closet today! Great suggestions!
Great job!
I love this list! You don’t have to tell us twice to go outside.. but waking up early is a different story altogether 😉
I know, I pushed myself to get up early today and it’s been such a better day!
Great ideas! I appreciate your insight!
Thanks!
