Afternoon Adventures at Crown Haven Center
Look what we found at Crown Haven Center near Kokomo, IN? Ever ridden in one of these? Until last week, I hadn’t either. It’s a M923 A2 Military logistics vehicle, and let me tell you, it is BIG.
Last week we were lucky enough to spend an afternoon adventuring at Crown Haven Center. It’s just outside Kokomo, Indiana about 40 minutes North of the Indianapolis area. Crown Haven Center would be a perfect day trip – the setting is beautiful and there is so much to do!
Our first adventure was heading off-road in that mammoth vehicle – it went right through streams, brush, and up and down hills like they were nothing. On the ride, we also got to see a small bit of the property and it is gorgeous. We drove by a campfire – perfect for Scouting or other groups to enjoy while camping, a gun range if your group is interested in shooting, and lots of nooks and crannies where wildlife lives.
In October, Crown Haven Center offers a unique outing on Friday/Saturday and Sunday nights. You’ll load up in the vehicle, equipped with paintball guns, and head out to shoot zombies. Sounds fun, right? If we can squeeze it in, you can bet we’ll be trying that out!!!
After that first adventure, we headed inside to give Archery Tag a try. Ever tried it? It’s an absolute blast and a terrific family activity – would also be a big hit for a birthday party. Bryce Barnes, who owns Crown Haven (and comes up with all these creative and fun adventures), gave us a short lesson on how to use the bows and arrows, and then we went at it. The bows have soft marshmallow-like tips on them, so when you get hit, it doesn’t hurt (and yes, I definitely got hit a few times).
The archery is set up inside Crown Haven’s indoor horse arena so even if the weather was off, it would be fun to play. Nearby is a party room with a kitchen, seating, and a bar where you can safely watch the action. However, it’s too much fun to play to just sit and watch!
Part of the fun of spending the afternoon at Crown Haven Center was all the animals we encountered. From multiple dogs running around to barn cats and kittens, horses and ponies, for animal lovers like us it was a bonus to enjoy such friendly greetings!
The final adventure for the afternoon was for our daughter. Like most teen girls, she’s a horse lover and Crown Haven Center has a wonderful riding program. They offer lessons, boarding, pony birthday parties, and even small group trail rides. Our daughter had a short lesson from the very knowledgeable trainer and then the opportunity to ride. After watching how much she enjoyed it, I think a family trail ride is in our future!
If you live near Indianapolis, Crown Haven Center is definitely a place you should check out, but even if you aren’t nearby, consider looking for activities like we enjoyed for a unique family adventure. I’ve seen archery tag popping up a lot in my searches lately, and I know many areas have horse stables that offer the opportunity to ride.
If you are in the Indianapolis area and looking for a beautiful venue, Crown Haven Center can host weddings, and they have a horse-drawn carriage – just imagine that for a wedding or prom!
