Fondue is FUN!
Want to try something FUN for dinner this week? And EASY? And HEALTHY? And that your kids will LOVE??? Here is your answer: FONDUE
Not the heavy, artery forming cheese and bread fondue or “cook my meat in boiling oil” fondue. Not even chocolate fondue (although I WILL get to that one). Nope, this is a delicious, light and tasty fondue. Kids love fondue – it’s a novelty, and kids tend to love to dip. My kids get very excited on fondue night. It’s a great way to add a festive quality to your meal and your kids are quite likely to try something they normally wouldn’t – since it’s fun!
Ready? Here you go:
Simple Fondue:
Step one: In a saucepan, bring 2 or 3 cups of chicken or vegetable broth to a boil. Add white wine if desired. Drop in a few garlic cloves and let it boil for a few minutes. I often turn down the heat a bit at this point and add in some chunks of potatoes and onions. The potatoes take a while to cook, so it’s easier just to have them already in there and ready to go.
Step two: Transfer the hot broth to a fondue pot (or if you don’t have one, you can use the saucepan on a hot plate or just over the stove).
Step three: Dip your meat and veggies in and leave until they are cooked through (be especially careful with chicken). Dip in assorted sauces and ENJOY!
To make this easy on yourself, have your dippers and sauces ready earlier in the day – then it’s just a matter of heating up the broth which only takes a few minutes. (Quick Tip: Since you don’t use a lot of any one kind of meat, I’ll go ahead and cut up enough for two meals then freeze half for the next time we want fondue.) The kids (and adults) get a real kick out of trying different combinations of veggies and meats and sauces. It’s fun, interactive, great for conversation and you won’t eat too much since it take a while.
Ideas for dippers:
steak, chicken, shrimp, scallops, lobster, squash, potatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower
Ideas for sauces:
- Asian (soy sauce, garlic, ginger and a bit of sugar)
- Horseradish (sour cream, horseradish, garlic, sea salt and pepper)
- Ranch dressing
- Cocktail sauce
- Mustard sauce (Trader Joe’s makes a nice sweet and spicy version)
So, next time you want to treat your family to a special night, bring on the fondue!
