Henry County in Indiana is a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts. Located in the heart of Indiana, Henry County parks offer a wide range of outdoor activities, whether you want to explore nature, enjoy water sports, or simply relax in a beautiful setting.
I’ve enjoyed several wonderful day trips to the area to check out all the outdoor adventures available. From kayaking at Summit Lake State Park to playing a round of disc golf at Baker Park in New Castle, it’s easy to spend an afternoon (or longer) at any one of the Henry County Parks.
Thanks to New Castle Henry County Econ. Dev. Corp for sponsoring some of my outdoor activities in Henry County. As always, my suggestions and opinions are 100% my own.

1. Summit Lake State Park
Summit Lake State Park is perfect if you love being on or near the water. Located just north of New Castle, this wonderful Indiana state park offers a range of options to keep the whole family entertained.
- Hiking Trails: The park boasts several trails that cater to different skill levels. Enjoy scenic views of the lake and the surrounding woodlands as you hike. I’ve tried just about all the trails after several visits and had fun exploring every one of them!
- Kayaking and Boating: The calm waters of Summit Lake are perfect for kayaking. They even have two kayak “trails” you can try to follow – ask for the map at the entrance gate. You can rent a kayak or bring your own. Boating enthusiasts can also enjoy fishing in the well-stocked lake.
- Beach: there is a little beach with a roped-off area for swimming, and one of the things I love about Summit Lake is how clear the water is – I can easily see my feet when I wade in the lake.
- Camping: For those who want to extend their stay, the park offers various camping options, from primitive campsites to full-service RV hookups.

As a huge lover of state parks, I first discovered this park several years ago when my son and I took off on a day trip. I was thrilled to find such a nice state park located so close to the Indianapolis area. It’s become a favorite of our family ever since that initial visit!
Insider tip: Did you forget to bring something along on your trip? Or want to start the day with a good cup of coffee or take an afternoon ice cream break? Stop at The Market on your way into the park! This adorable store has everything you need!

2. Henry County Memorial Park
Our first visit to Henry County Memorial Park was in mid-July to check out the Henry County 4-H Fair. Unfortunately, it rained heavily that day, so we admired the 4-H exhibits, watched some of the sheep being shown and then left as we couldn’t really enjoy the rest of the park.
Luckily, on our return visit, the day was beautiful! New Castle Memorial Park is rich in history and full of recreational opportunities, which makes it a must-visit when you are in Henry County. Located on the edge of New Castle, this park offers a blend of activities for everyone.
- Equestrian Center: This equestrian center is impressive! It’s by far one of the largest I’ve seen in Indiana, and after talking to a few locals, it’s a huge draw in the summer months.
- Picnicking: You’ll easily find a perfect spot under the shade of the mature trees. The park provides numerous picnic tables and shelters ideal for a family lunch.
- Playgrounds: The park features plenty of playground area to help the kids let off steam.
- History: Not only are there quite a few war memorials scattered around Memorial Park, but it is also home to the Henry County Veterans Museum (its hours are limited, so call ahead if you want to visit).
- Memorial Park Golf Course: on the edge of Henry County Memorial Park is the Memorial Park Golf Course. This lovely golf course is very affordable and is open to everyone, so if you enjoy playing the game, consider bringing your clubs with you to Henry County!

3. Westwood Park
Westwood Park was such a surprise find for me! This hidden gem in Henry County offers a mix of outdoor activities that cater to both adventure seekers and those looking to relax. Located between New Castle and Knightstown, this park really is a perfect spot for outdoor fun!
- Hiking and Mountain Biking Trails: With several miles of trails, Westwood Park is perfect for both hiking and biking. I was thrilled to find a challenging mountain biking trail at Westwood as my brother is an avid biker and always looking for a new trail to try!
- Water Activities: Enjoy the park’s lake, where you can go kayaking, boating, or fishing. When I visited it was still early morning and it was wonderful to sit on a bench enjoying my coffee while watching the fishermen out trying their luck.
- Camping: Spend the night under the stars with the park’s camping facilities. Options range from tent camping to RV sites, all equipped with necessary amenities.
- Horse Trail: Westwood Park also has a well-maintained horse trail along with a wide open area perfect for letting your horse rest while you picnic!
I truly couldn’t believe I’d never heard of this park before. Just a short drive from Indianapolis, it would make for an easy drive if you are just wanting to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city for a day. Add in a few hours of antiquing in Knightstown and you’ve got yourself a relaxing day!
Insider tip: Westwood Park is owned and operated by Big Blue River Conservancy District, so there is a gate with a minimal entrance fee – have cash on hand to make it easier. If you live nearby you might consider an annual pass!

4. Baker Park
Baker Park is another New Castle Park that is located right in town (next to the High School), and it’s a great spot in town for outdoor activities and relaxation. Plus, it’s located quite close to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, too, so after you spend time indoors visiting that awesome attraction, you can head outside to Baker Park to soak up the sun!
- Aquatic Center: Baker Park has an excellent aquatic park – I actually remember visiting it when I was a kid as I had relatives who lived in New Castle, and honestly, it’s just gotten better since then! It’s also crazy affordable, so if your kids love to swim, consider spending a few hours here in the summer.
- Picnic Areas: Pack a picnic and find a perfect spot with available picnic tables and shelters.
- Sports Fields and Courts: The park includes basketball courts, disc golf, shuffleboard, playgrounds, and more, providing plenty of opportunities for family-friendly sports and games.
- Skate Park: There is also a super nice skate park next to the aquatic center. It is quite large and one of the best I’ve seen in Indiana!

I love it when a city park is as nice as this one. We have a few great ones in Noblesville too, and when the kids were little going to the park was always one of their favorite things to do. And, whenever we headed out on a day trip, a promise to play in the park made the other activities (shopping, historical sites, etc.) much more tolerable for them!

5. Sunset Park
If you’ve spent an afternoon in Knightstown browsing the many antique shops and sipping wine at Harmony Winery (and you should do this sometime!), Sunset Park is the perfect place to cap off your day.
- Splash pad: I haven’t met a kid yet who doesn’t love a splash pad, so if it’s a hot summer day in Indiana, this could be a wonderful afternoon break.
- Playground: The park has a large well-maintained playground that I know would have satisfied my kids when they were playground age!
- Picnicking: Find ideal spots for a picnic with family and friends, either near the playground, splash pad or even down in the shelter on the large lawn area.

Places to Eat When Visiting Henry County Indiana
If you haven’t planned ahead early enough to pack a picnic when visiting one of these Henry County Parks (and no judgement here – I often would rather try a local restaurant!), here are a few suggestions of the BEST places to eat near each of these parks.
1000 Degree Wood Fired Pizza
If you are visiting Summit Lake State Park, then a stop at 1000 Degree Wood Fired Pizza is almost a must. My son and one of his friends have taken little road trips with their dads specifically to eat there!
This place is kinda crazy inside (but in a good way), with memorablia stuffed into every possible corner. There is both inside and outside seating, and the pizza is amazing. For something a little different, add an order of the pretzel sticks and maybe a side salad so you can feel like you are being a little bit healthy!

Ink & Ale Brewhouse
For your visits to Henry County Memorial Park or Baker Park, consider lunch or dinner at Ink & Ale Brewhouse in New Castle. It’s a new spot located near Press Coffee Co (another great spot) in the old newspaper building.
Ink & Ale serves delicious burgers, a variety of appetizers, sandwiches, etc. and they have a very impressive list of beers and ciders both on tap and in cans. For us, it was the perfect end to a day exploring the outdoor adventures to be found in Henry County!
Ink & Ale Brewhouse, 239 S. 14th Street, New Castle, IN

The Burch Tree Cafe & Bakery
If you want to fill up on a good old-fashioned breakfast before visiting Westwood Park, or stop and pick up a decadent cupcake after playing at Sunset Park, consider The Burch Tree Cafe & Bakery in Knightstown.
We had a delicious (and filling) breakfast, along with coffee to-go, before heading over to Westwood Park, and that gave us plenty of fuel to explore all morning. I also picked up a few cupcakes to enjoy as an afternoon snack, and they were delicious!
