Looking for Summer Reading Suggestions?

books

Man did I read some great books in May!  I really hit the jackpot this month with terrific books.  Although I enjoyed everything I read, I’m sharing a bit more about my favorites below:

Non-Fiction

My favorite book this month – and I’m sure it will end up on my top ten list at the end of the year.  I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book.   If you are a parent (not just moms here), you need to read this book.  It made me think long and hard about what is most important in my life – as a mother, spouse and friend.  I borrowed it from the library, but next time I see a good sale at the bookstore I’ll be picking up my own copy.  Definitely a book I’ll want to re-read – probably every year or so.  My rating:  5 out of 5

My little guy is seven, which is the perfect age to read Dannah Gresh’s book “Six Ways to Keep the “Good” in Your Boy.”  Last year I read Six Ways to Keep the “Little” in Your Girl: Guiding Your Daughter from Her Tweens to Her Teens (Secret Keeper Girl Series)
which I found very helpful with my daughter as she reaches her tween years, so I knew I wanted to read the “boys version” soon.  It is written from a Christian perspective, which I appreciated, but might not be for everyone, so keep that in mind.  However, the advice is solid when it comes to raising a strong and good boy.  My rating:  4.5 out of 5

Autobiography

I’ll be honest, at first I wasn’t sure I’d like (or even finish) this book.  I had some trouble getting into it.   I am very glad I stuck it out.  What a fascinating account of how one Jewish woman survived the war – by living IN Germany using another identity.  Most of us are familiar with the stories of the concentration camps, but not those who were not taken from their families and found other ways to hide (and you do hear some stories of others in this account).  I loved her philosophy that you couldn’t separate “good” people from “bad” people because you couldn’t predict how someone would act.  A “good” person could just as easily turn her in as a “bad” person could offer a hand.  My rating:  3.5 out of 5

Fiction

I’d been looking for something new to read aloud to the kids before bed.  Both of them are capable of reading on their own, but they still enjoy it when we read a chapter book together, so as long as they’ll listen, I’ll keep reading to them.  This month we started on the Imagination Station Series.  We’ve read books 1 and 2 and are in the midst of #3.  The chapters are very short, there is plenty of action, and I love the moral aspect of the stories.  A set of cousins (Patrick and Beth) find themselves able to travel back in time using the Imagination Station to help a friendly neighborhood scientist.  Both my kids love the books and in fact I have to hide the one we are currently reading from my daughter so she won’t finish it on her own!!!  My rating:  4 out of 5.

What is on your bookshelf for the summer?  Anything you can’t wait to read?  Any favorites from the last few weeks?  Please share in the comments so we can all enjoy some terrific books!
