It’s a sunny weekend, and your crew is itching to get outside. You want somewhere close, fun for the kids, and packed with outdoor activities—but you’re tired of the usual spots.
I’ve definitely been there—Googling “outdoor family fun near me,” hoping for something fresh and fun. That’s why I’ve put together this list of 5 amazing parks, all within an hour of Indy, that we’ve personally explored and loved.
Whether you’re looking to hike, climb, paddle, or picnic, these parks offer something for everyone in the family – and I’ve even suggested fun ideas for inexpensive things to do before or after your park visit so you can make a day of it!

1. Flat Fork Creek Park – Fishers, IN
For some reason, I tend to forget about Flat Fork Creek Park, which is a real shame, as it’s a fantastic park quite close to me. This local park has a fantastic array of fun things to do and is a wonderful spot for a laid-back adventure with little ones – although your older kids will find fun things to do, too!
The playgrounds are treehouse-style and nestled in the woods, and there are spots for creek exploration as well as beginner-friendly trails. You can even find a pretty darn cool mountain bike trail with ramps and other fun challenges if your family is a bit more daring.
In the winter, there is a sledding hill, making it a great spot for winter fun. However, even in the summer, the hill serves as a great overlook spot.
My favorite way to enjoy this park is to stop first at the super cute nearby Schoolhouse 7 Cafe, pick up a delicious coffee, head over to the park, and then take a leisurely walk with our dog. He loves this park, and I love being outside enjoying my coffee, so it’s a win-win for both of us.
After your time at the park, head over to the always-growing Hamilton Town Center in nearby Noblesville for a little retail therapy or a tasty lunch. You’ll find plenty of choices for shopping or eating, and since it’s an outdoor mall, it’s another nice place for a stroll.
Insider tip: if you have your dog with you, consider lunch at one of my favorite local spots, Yat’s. You can order at the counter and then eat at one of the outdoor tables with your pup!

2. Strawtown Koteewi Park – Noblesville, IN
Speaking of terrific parks near me, Strawtown Koteewi Park in my hometown of Noblesville ranks high. I love that it’s a year-round option for family fun, from a very cool tubing hill in the winter to all kinds of fun activities in the summer; it’s definitely one of my go-to spots.
Not only will you find your typical hiking trails at Koteewi (some of which are along the river for beautiful views), but you can also enjoy archery, a small lake perfect for kayaking (which we’ve done even in the fall so we could enjoy the gorgeous foiliage), horseback riding, and even a ropes course.
Insider tip: some of the activities do cost extra, like the archery, horseback riding, tubing, and ropes course, so plan accordingly.
Once you’ve had your fill of outdoor fun, check out the Taylor Center of Natural History – I’ve enjoyed many field trips with my kiddos there, and the employees know their stuff! It’s perfect for mixing in some hands-on learning along with outdoor experiences.
After you’ve spent a day at Koteewi (which is easy to do), grab some ice cream at the local favorite, Alexander’s, in nearby Cicero – the ice cream is delicious, and you can’t beat the view of Morse Lake. 3. Eagle Creek Park – Indianapolis, IN
Although I’ve visited Eagle Creek Park many times over the years, my favorite memory involves the time my first dog and I participated in a 5K for dogs there. I have no idea if they still hold them, but it was a lot of fun.
Dog events aside, Eagle Creek Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the United States – it features a beautiful lake, numerous trails, and much more! You can rent a boat or kayak to enjoy the lake, buy tickets to the Go Ape treetop adventure and enjoy the challenging ropes course, or simply pack a picnic and relax.
One of my favorite things to do after an afternoon at Eagle Creek Park is to head over to Rick’s Cafe Boatyard for a meal with a view (the food is fine, but the view is really where it’s at – so sometimes I’ll just get an appetizer and a drink and call it good). If you are lucky, there will be live music too!

Insider tip: there is an admission fee to Eagle Creek Park, so be prepared before you visit.

4. Holliday Park – Indianapolis, IN
Holliday Park is one of my all-time favorite parks in Indianapolis. I’ve been visiting it for years and always enjoy my time there. The highlight of the park is the very interesting and unique “ruins”.
On my last visit, we decided to actually learn why the ruins were there. I had always just taken them for granted as part of the park, and it turns out they were the early facade of a skyscraper from New York City. The city “won” them as part of a contest, and they were moved to Holliday Park in the late 1970s. Only in Indy!
After you’ve explored the ruins – and taken a boatload of pictures for Instagram, head over to the small but interesting nature center. If we don’t have our pup with us, we always stop in and spend half an hour exploring.
Finally, be sure to enjoy some of the wooded trails behind the nature center. We’ll walk down to the river and often splash around if the conditions allow for it. Sometimes, there will be concerts or other events that can make your visit to Holliday Park even more exciting!
Holliday Park is not too far from Broadripple Village, which is a fantastic place to grab lunch or dinner after your time at the park. A few favorites include Fire by the Monon and Canal Bistro. Or, you can just pick up a coffee or something sweet somewhere along the main drag.

5. McCloud Nature Park – North Salem, IN
Head over to Hendricks County for my last outdoor fun suggestion and visit McCloud Nature Park in North Salem, IN. It’s really quite close to Indy, but since it’s out of town, you’ll feel like you are really getting away for the day.
McCloud features several quiet, scenic trails with wooden footbridges and offers numerous lovely views. The facility also features a butterfly garden and a well-designed interactive nature center. I especially like the hands-on nature programs, so I always try to time my visits to coincide with one of them.
Although I think that the park is worth the drive for the peaceful outdoor play and exploration you’ll experience, it would be a fantastic idea to combine it with an afternoon and/or evening in nearby Danville, IN. At the very least, either start your day with breakfast at the always amazing Bread Basket Cafe & Bakery (after all, you will be walking all afternoon!) or end it with some of my all-time favorite BBQ at Rusted Silo.

Insider tip: Bread Basket and Rusted Silo are both closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan your day trip accordingly if a visit to either is on your agenda.
