Remember last year when I decided to do my best to focus on one thing at a time? Yeah, that didn’t last.
Here it is March and I find myself juggling FOUR excellent online programs. Let’s face it, between work, kids, coaching and just enjoying life I barely have time for ONE, let alone four. What was I thinking? Why do I do this to myself? For me, it’s the fear of missing out. All the programs sounded terrific – all things I want to learn/ improve upon. So, I signed up. I’m excited. And if I was just doing one at a time, it would be fantastic. But with four, I just can’t keep up so I end up doing a half-hearted attempt at each one.
Seeing that I’m in this situation again, how do I fix it? Here is my plan (and suggestion for you if you find yourself overwhelmed with projects you brought on yourself):
- Decide how much free time I have to devote to learning in the next few months.
- Take a hard look at all four programs.
- Decide which of the four is most important to my current goals.
- Schedule time each week to work on the one program that is MOST useful.
- Here is the hard part . . . let the others go.
I need to trust that the opportunity will be available again when the time is right. Plus, I KNOW I’ll get more benefit from taking my time, soaking in the learning and applying it with one program versus just doing the bare minimum of a few to “get them done.”
Does this happen to you? Maybe not online learning, but projects you’ve taken on, things you’ve added to your “to do” list? Do you regularly find yourself taking on more than you can manage? What do YOU do to bring yourself back to reality?
Luckily for me, this time I caught myself early. Before I got stressed out and overwhelmed. So, although I slipped, I do feel like I’m making progress!
