Places to Stay In Shipshewana Indiana
If you want a hotel located in the town of Shipshewana there are several choices I’d recommend. From the rustic allure of The Farmstead Inn to the cozy, tradition-rich environment of The Blue Gate Garden Inn, and the centrally located comfort of The Van Buren Hotel, any of these three hotels would be wonderful picks for your family trip.
1. The Farmstead Inn: a taste of country living
The Farmstead Inn & Conference Center is located next to the famous Shipshewana Flea Market, so if you are planning on a visit there, it’s a wonderful choice. This large Inn has several gorgeous gathering areas, a free buffet breakfast, an indoor ping-pong room as well as an indoor basketball court, an indoor pool and hot tub, and plenty of spacious and comfortable rooms.
On my last visit to Shipshewana, I spent three lovely nights at the Farmstead Inn and it was perfect for my needs. I especially appreciated the free coffee in the lobby and the large room. Everything was super clean too, so no worries there. When I stayed it was November, so the over-the-top gorgeous Christmas decorations around the Inn really made for a special stay.
Rooms are quite affordable and include a microwave and mini-fridge for leftovers or quick snacks. Note that there isn’t a restaurant on-site, so you’ll have to head elsewhere for lunch/dinner.

2. The Blue Gate Garden Inn: where hospitality meets tradition
If you are at all familiar with Shipshewana, odds are good you have heard of the Blue Gate. Not only is there a Blue Gate Garden Inn (highly recommended), but also a Blue Gate Restaurant & Theatre in town, and the Blue Gate Performing Arts Center.
The Performing Arts Center (PAC) is located right next door to the Blue Gate Garden Inn, so this hotel would be my top pick if I was seeing a concert there – talk about convenience!
The Blue Gate Garden Inn is cozy and comfortable and a lovely place to make your home base when you visit Shipshewana. It’s very family-friendly with spacious and comfortable rooms, a free morning breakfast and so much more. There is an indoor pool, pickleball court, basketball court, and firepit area – all perfect for family fun.

3. The Van Buren Hotel: comfort in the heart of Shipshewana
My final suggestion for a hotel stay in Shipshewana is the Van Buren Hotel. This hotel has comfortable guest rooms with a mini-fridge and microwave, 24/7 coffee/tea/hot chocolate, and a free breakfast.
Some of the hotel’s amenities include an indoor pool, a small fitness center, and board game rental. I love the board game rental – we take advantage of this often when we visit Vero Beach in Florida and it’s a fun way to spend an evening at a hotel with the kids. Make some hot chocolate, find a cozy corner, and have some quality family time!

If none of these hotels fit your needs, there are several others I’d recommend that are nearby. Both of these options are quite different, but excellent choices depending upon your preferences and needs.
4. The Essenhaus in nearby Middlebury
The Essenhaus Inn is part of a lovely complex in nearby Middlebury, Indiana. In addition to beautiful rooms (each one a little bit different), the Inn has cozy spots to hang out and a delicious restaurant (Das Essenhaus) on site. Plus, right across the street is a whole little village full of unique shops well worth exploring as well as a miniature golf course.
Pam’s insider tip: Don’t miss Das Essenhaus if you are staying at the Essenhaus Inn – it is comfort food at its finest!
There are two sections to the Inn, the newer part and the older area (called the Atrium). The newer section is set up more like standard hotel rooms while the older section has a variety of unique rooms. Regardless of which section you stay in, you’ll be quite comfortable.
The Essenhaus Inn has an indoor pool, fitness room, and paved trails perfect for short walks in the morning. Some of the rooms even have balconies – which is a huge bonus in my book – there is nothing I love more than enjoying my morning coffee with a good book on a balcony when we are traveling.
5. The Hotel Elkhart: blending history with modern comfort
If you prefer a stay that is a bit bougie, then you’ll enjoy The Hotel Elkhart. Although a little further from Shipshewana, it’s within easy driving distance and in a lovely location in downtown Elkhart. The hotel is beautifully decorated with comfortable, spacious rooms and has a fantastic coffee shop in the lobby for grabbing a strong, hand-crafted drink before you start your day.
The hotel also boasts a wonderful restaurant with a variety of tasty dishes and fun cocktails. If the weather is nice it’s a lovely place to sit out on the patio and have dinner and drinks. Overall, if you prefer a more traditional hotel stay, the Hotel Elkhart should be your pick. I loved staying at this hotel and am actively looking for a free weekend to get back up to Elkhart and stay there again!
Note: there is no pool at this hotel, so if you are traveling with kids who think pools are the best part of a hotel experience, this wouldn’t be the right choice.
Another thing to consider when visiting Shipshewana is that almost everything in Shipshewana is closed on Sunday, but there are still many things to do in Elkhart. So, for a long weekend, maybe book two nights in Shipshewana and then Saturday night at Hotel Elkhart – just a suggestion!
