Overview of Boyne Mountain SkyBridge

The Boyne Mountain SkyBridge in Northern Michigan is a real standout, showing off what happens when cool engineering meets awesome views. They kicked off this project in 2021 with a big idea: to make something unique that wouldn’t mess with nature too much.

Once it was done, it opened on October 15, 2022, and earned its bragging rights as Michigan’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge. The SkyBridge isn’t just about being long and high (although it is!); it’s about giving everyone who walks across it a new perspective of the gorgeous views at Boyne Mountain.

What to expect when you visit the Boyne Mountain Skybridge

The Boyne Mountain sky bridge towers are made from wooden timbers, from a local spot in Boyne Falls. They’re put together with strong internal bracing, while the main cable holding everything up is made from tough galvanized steel. As for where you walk, that’s built on steel framing and topped with a pultruded grating deck. This bridge is solid!

Planning Your Visit to Boyne Mountain’s SkyBridge

Ready to visit? Here are a few tips for the best times, how to get there, and how much it will cost for you to enjoy the Boyne Mountain SkyBridge.

Best times to visit the Boyne Mountain SkyBridge

One of the fun things about the SkyBridge is that it’s open year-round! So, you can enjoy it in the winter during the ski season, the spring and summer when everything is green, and my favorite, the fall when the leaves are stunning.

That being said, unless you like winter in Michigan (which I do), I would suggest visiting when the weather is warm – you’ll be able to spend more time outside enjoying the bridge and the area around it.

My insider tip: The bridge does close if the winds are more than 35 mph or if there is lightning or thunder within 15 miles.

Tickets and admission prices

You do need to buy tickets to cross the bridge, although if you are skiing or hiking you can view it (just not walk across it). Ticket prices range between $20 and $30 depending upon how you purchase. It’s cheaper to purchase tickets online and you do get a discount if you are staying onsite.

In the past, I have seen a less expensive “add-on” to your lift ticket, so if you plan on skiing, look to see if that is available when you purchase your lift tickets.

Getting there

The SkyBridge is located at Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls, Michigan. It’s a wonderful year-round vacation destination – one of my favorite places! We visit at least 4 or 5 times a year.

There are only two ways to get to the SkyBridge – walking or riding a lift. Your Boyne Mountain SkyBridge tickets include a ride on one of the ski lifts, so that’s the easiest method.

Unique Things to Do at Boyne Mountain SkyBridge

Just walking across the bridge is pretty darn impressive. At 1200 feet long it is quite amazing to walk across it – and in the middle, there is see-through flooring – probably a bit scary if you are afraid of heights, but fantastic if you aren’t!

However, since the bridge has been open, Boyne Resorts has created several fun and unusual events focused on enjoying the SkyBridge in different ways. So far, we’ve seen 150K twinkling lights covering it in the wintertime (beautiful!!!), a combination of snowshoeing/hiking and dinner events, and more.

Last summer, we visited over Labor Day and the resort held a “strings in the sky” event where they had some wonderful electric strings concerts in the evening at the far side of the bridge. With firepits and a food truck, it was a really fun way to spend a late summer evening.

Tips for Visitors to Michigan’s SkyBridge

Here are a few tips to make your Michigan SkyBridge experience better:

  • Wear comfortable shoes. It’s a long walk across and you’ll probably want to hang out up on top of the mountain for a while once you arrive.
  • Bring a jacket. Even in the summer, it can get chilly in the evenings, and at the higher elevation, even more so.
  • Bring your camera. You’re going to want to take pictures (and maybe video) of the views.
  • Visit more than once. Your ticket gives you all-day access, so consider visiting in the morning and then again in the evening as the sun begins to set.
  • Buy your ticket online to save money.

Where to Stay When Visiting Boyne Mountain’s SkyBridge

When we visit Boyne Mountain Resort, we almost always stay at either the Mountain Grand Lodge or Mountain Run. However, there are also plenty of VRBO rentals on the mountain, or you could choose to stay in nearby Petoskey, Boyne City, or Harbor Springs.

For visiting the Boyne Mountain SkyBridge, the Mountain Grand Lodge is your best bet, because you can walk right over to the skylift from your room – no driving necessary. And, you can enjoy everything the resort has to offer conveniently!
