Are you searching for a Midwest weekend getaway that’s all about fresh air, wildlife, and a bit of hands-on history? If you’re anything like me, when the weather’s nice—especially during an Indiana summer—I want to be outside as much as possible. And lucky for us, Lafayette-West Lafayette is the kind of place where you can easily fill a weekend with outdoor adventures that are fun, educational, and family-friendly.
I know it can be tough to find spots that combine nature with activities everyone enjoys. That’s why I love pointing people to this area. I actually grew up here, and even now, I’m still surprised by how much there is to do just an hour north of Indianapolis.
From exploring state parks and walking through prairie trails to spotting wolves up close or learning about Indiana’s early history, Lafayette-West Lafayette offers that perfect mix of adventure and quiet beauty.
Whether you’re planning a day trip or a whole weekend away, this itinerary has you covered. I’m sharing my favorite local spots that combine wildlife, parks, and history—all tried and tested from my years of experience both growing up here and visiting again as an adult with my own family. Let’s get into it!
Thanks to Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette for hosting a wonderful experience, including a night at the gorgeous Union Club Hotel. All thoughts and opinions are 100% mine.

Day 1: History & Wildlife Encounters
I always like to sneak a little history into my trips. I find that my kids are okay with it as long as it’s mixed with fun – and this weekend includes plenty of fun!
Coffee at Reveille Coffee Bar
You can’t start your day without coffee, right? At least you can’t in my family. When we travel, we always search out the best local coffee shops, and Lafayette-West Lafayette has plenty.
Swing by Reveille Coffee Bar in downtown Lafayette for a bracing Americano or decadent latte. Although the atmosphere is conducive to hanging out, get your drink to go, as we’ve got a lot of ground to cover!
Reveille Coffee Bar, 1001 Main Street, Lafayette, IN

Tippecanoe Battlefield & Museum
Just a few miles from downtown is the Tippecanoe Battlefield & Museum. Not only is the setting beautiful, but it’s also a great way to learn about the significance of the Tippecanoe Battlefield as part of Indiana history.
We spent a bit of time exploring the museum (and there were several interactive exhibits, which are great for kids) and also had a terrific conversation with the manager. He helped us understand why and how the Battle of Tippecanoe occurred.
The grounds also include a small but interesting nature center that had a viewing area where we observed an insane number of squirrels – truly, I’ve never seen so many at one time, as well as a beautiful monument.
Around the backside of the nature center are several trails and a bridge that goes over Burnett Creek – it’s a gorgeous spot for photos or just to enjoy nature. You’ll easily be able to spend most of the morning exploring the grounds as well as the historical aspects of this landmark.

Insider tip: The museum does charge admission (although the grounds are free to visit), and it is closed on Wednesdays.
Picnic Lunch
Since your entire day is spent out in Battleground, pack a picnic lunch to enjoy before you leave The Tippecanoe Battlefield Park. Not in the mood to put forth the work? Pick up some sandwiches the day before and just stow them in a cooler. Simple and delicious – especially when you enjoy them outdoors!

Wolf Park
Once you’ve refueled, head just down the road to visit a very unique Lafayette-West Lafayette experience – Wolf Park. Wolf Park is a wildlife education and research facility that is home to wolves, foxes, bison, and more.
They have all kinds of public programs, such as howl nights (which are super cool) and guided tours. I visited for field trips when I was a kid and again on field trips with my own kids! I’ve also spent time there just on my own.
If you love learning about animals native to Indiana like wolves and bison, Wolf Park is a fantastic resource. It was founded in 1972 to study wolves in a natural setting. Through the years, it has expanded to include bison, fox, and a few other species. The pack of wolves consists of around 12, allowing them plenty of room. It’s the same for the bison.
Although you can just visit during normal operating hours, consider booking a guided tour ahead of time or joining in on one of the special programs – you’ll get a lot more out of the visit and learn quite a bit more, too.

Evening Dinner Recommendation – Arni’s Restaurant
Ready to call it a day? Head back into town for dinner at Arni’s Lafayette Market Square Restaurant. With a wide variety of sandwiches and pizzas, it’s a terrific spot for a delicious dinner, and casual enough for stopping in after being outdoors all day.
If you have the kids with you, ask to eat in the Toy Room. Sans kiddos? Check out the Loading Dock bar. Either one is a fun atmosphere that adds to the experience!

Day 2: Farm Life & State Park Fun
Today is all about farm life, along with a little bit of hiking – which is my favorite way to spend a day outdoors!
Morning Coffee at Jump Start Coffee
Ready for another day of outdoor fun? Get a jumpstart at Jump Start Coffee. Their Americano is excellent, and the atmosphere is super fun!
Once again, although it would be a nice place to linger, since it’s your last day in the area, grab your coffee to go and head to your first stop!

The Farm at Prophetstown (within Prophetstown State Park)
Prophetstown state park is the newest state park in Indiana. In addition to being an excellent park (more on that later), it also houses The Farm at Prophetstown, which is a working 1920s-style recreated farm.
Once you’ve paid the admission fee to the park, the farm itself is free and it is absolutely lovely. Kids will LOVE getting up close to the farm animals (chickens and ducks roam free), exploring the farmhouses, and, if they are lucky, participating in some hands-on activities (like collecting eggs!).
The farm also has multiple activities each month, so there is almost always something going on. I know I plan for my next visit to be either a farm-to-table dinner, a family cook-out day, or one of the other fun events.

Explore Prophetstown State Park
Once you’ve had your fun on the farm, head out to explore the rest of Prophetstown State Park. The park felt really unique to me as I’m used to the traditional Indiana State Parks which have lots of wooded trails, whereas Prophetstown is covered with wide-open prairie fields.
There are four easy-to-moderate trails for hiking – plus a 3.5-mile bike/hiking trail if that’s your preference. If it’s a hot day, be sure to bring along a swimsuit and have some fun at the aquatic center – it has several large waterslides and, my favorite, a lazy river.
A few other interesting features at this park include the Circle of Stones and the reconstructed Native American village. At the Circle of Stones, each stone commemorates one of the tribes that lived at Prophetstown. The village contains replicas of a Shawnee council house and medicine lodge.

Visit Wildcat Creek Winery
Along with searching out local coffee shops, another favorite activity of ours is finding a local brewery or winery. Although Lafayette has several options, Wildcat Creek Winery fits right in with our “outdoors” themed weekend itinerary.
Enjoy a tasting at the tasting bar, and when you’ve decided upon your favorite, grab a glass along with some cheese, sausage, and crackers and head out to the beautiful outdoor garden space to remember and have a toast to your relaxing weekend exploring the outdoor wonders of Lafayette-West Lafayette!

Celery Bog Nature Area (Optional Late Afternoon Stop)
Do you have a little extra time in your itinerary? If so, consider a stop at the Celery Bog Nature Preserve, which is just a short drive away in West Lafayette. It has some lovely quiet walking trails (some with elevated boardwalks) as well as the Lilly Nature Center.
I’ve spent many hours wanding the preserve on my various trips to the area, and I’ve found it to be a good way to unwind and reflect before heading home.

Where to Stay
Looking for the perfect hotel? Although you can find just about any chain hotel in Lafayette-West Lafayette, for something special, book a room at The Union Hotel at Purdue University. This student-run Autograph collection hotel is comfortable, has a fantastic location, and feels a bit bougie.
If it’s not available (and it does book up quickly because it’s so awesome), my second choice would be the TownePlace Suites in West Lafayette. It’s a newer property, so it is clean and comfortable – with fairly large rooms, too.

Final Tips for a Great Weekend
Since this is an outdoors-centric weekend, be sure to check the weather forecast before your trip (if rain is in the forecast consider switching up your plans to enjoy more of the artistic aspects of Lafayette-West Lafayette). Spring through fall would be my suggestions for when to visit.
Be sure to pack comfortable clothes and definitely good walking or hiking shoes. If you plan on swimming at the Prophetstown Aquatic Center don’t forget your swimsuit! Bring along a great cooler and a picnic lunch for Saturday, or you could consider driving back into town for lunch at one of the many iconic West Lafayette restaurants if that’s your preference.

Conclusion: 2-Day Lafayette-West Lafayette Outdoor Weekend Itinerary
So there you have it! Whether you are more into the history of the Tippecanoe Battlefield or want to learn more about animals native to Indiana, this weekend itinerary will help you slow down and uncover it all.
You’ll enjoy a nice mix of nature, education, good food, and wholesome fun, all while spending plenty of time outdoors and minimal time driving! To me, as a Midwesterner, this type of weekend is exactly what an Indiana summer is all about.
